ご紹介するのは、ワルシャワ王宮・玉座の間に飾られていた 王冠付き白鷲（Orzeł w koronie） を再現した、1970〜1980年代に作られたタペストリー です。
デザインは Danuta Jaworska Thomas (ダヌータ・ヤボルスカ・トーマス）によるもので、ポーランドの芸術家協同組合„ŁAD” の工房で制作されました。
当時のポーランドは社会主義体制下、公式国章は、王政の象徴である王冠が外された 「王冠のない白鷲」 が使われていました。
しかしこのタペストリーは、「18世紀の王宮装飾を忠実に復元した作品」 として制作が許容されました。
公式には政治的意図はなかったものの、王冠付き白鷲を作り続けること自体が、当時の民族の誇りや歴史を守る静かな行動 として受け止められていました。
素材には 羊毛とリネンの縦糸 が使われ、手織りならではの温かみある質感が特徴です。
「ŁAD」の芸術家たちの手仕事とともに、ポーランドの歴史を感じる一枚として、独立記念日に特別にご紹介します。

November 11th is Poland’s National Independence Day.
On this occasion, we are presenting a tapestry depicting the crowned white eagle (Orzeł w koronie), which once adorned the Throne Room of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, recreated in the 1970s–1980s.
The design was created by Danuta Jaworska Thomas, and the tapestry was made in the workshop of the Polish artists’ cooperative Spółdzielnia Artystów Plastyków „ŁAD”.
At that time, the official Polish coat of arms under the socialist regime featured a crownless eagle, as the royal symbol had been removed.
However, this tapestry was recognized as a faithful reconstruction of the 18th-century Royal Castle decoration, which allowed its creation.
While it had no official political intent, creating a crowned white eagle was perceived as a quiet act of preserving national pride and historical memory.
The tapestry is woven from wool and linen, giving it the warm texture characteristic of handmade textiles.
Along with the craftsmanship of the “ŁAD” artists, it offers a tangible connection to Poland’s history, making it a special piece to present on Independence Day.
